A report in The Guardian highlights a lack of compliance among UK government departments about the mandatory requirement to register the use of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. Despite the critical role of AI in decision-making processes, not a single department has fulfilled this requirement. Currently, only nine AI systems have been officially registered, with none associated with welfare, the Home Office, or the police.
Peter Kyle, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, acknowledged the seriousness of the need for transparency.
Kyle said: "I accept that if the government is using algorithms on behalf of the public, the public have a right to know. The public needs to feel that algorithms are there to serve them and not the other way around. The only way to do that is to be transparent about their use."
