US government no longer lists Russia as a cybersecurity threat

01/03/2025 | The Guardian

The Trump administration has taken a controversial stance by downplaying Russia's role as a cyber threat to US national security and critical infrastructure, a significant shift from previous intelligence evaluations. Experts express concern that this new policy could expose the United States to increased hacking risks from Russia, reflecting a notable warming of relations between President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In stark contrast, representatives from the European Union and the UK highlighted the persistent dangers posed by Russia, particularly in light of its aggressive cyber-attacks on Ukraine amid the ongoing conflict. Veteran cyber expert James Lewis criticized the US approach, expressing disbelief that officials could ignore Russia's antagonistic stance and asserting that such a mentality is misguided and dangerous. The overarching concern is that this policy shift from the US government may embolden Russia's cyber activities, leaving the nation notably vulnerable.

Meanwhile, Axios reports the US government is drafting a plan to to ease sanctions on Russia and begun prisoner swaps.
