Ireland squandered opportunity to become EU digital super enforcer

In an Op-Ed for the Irish Times, Johnny Ryan, senior fellow at the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, has written a scathing assessment of the GDPR enforcement track record of the Irish Data Protection Commission and claims it is the main reason behind the European Commission's decision to supervise technology companies under the DSA exclusively. In the article, Mr Ryan said, "the DPC's failure to uphold the rights of 448 million Europeans creates strategic economic and reputational risks for Ireland." He goes on to say that while action to strengthen and reform the DPC is being considered, it's already too late after the European Parliament signalled that it intends to take the same approach with the AI Act.
