Apple, Google, and Microsoft to work together to eliminate passwords

In a rare show of collaboration, Apple, Google, and Microsoft have got behind standards developed by the Fast Identity Online (FIDO) Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) that could completely eliminate passwords. The FIDO Alliance announced on World Password Day that the three US technology companies plan to implement these standards by early 2023 at the latest. This means users can access online services and apps using password-less authentication methods, such as the device PIN, fingerprint or face scans that they use to unlock their existing devices.
