In a rapidly evolving digital landscape, the exponential growth of data has become a concern for Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) across enterprises. A generation ago, data was scarce, but today, organisations manage enormous quantities, often in multiple petabytes. This vast accumulation has rendered data nearly invisible to many, but for CISOs, it presents a significant challenge. As data is captured and stored in various systems, security professionals find it increasingly difficult to maintain awareness of all the data they hold. Furthermore, there is a troubling disconnect regarding the understanding of reputational and financial risks associated with potential data breaches. Consequently, the responsibility for these vulnerabilities often falls squarely on the CISO, regardless of who was at fault. This evolving landscape has led many CISOs to conclude that the costs associated with managing data may outweigh its overall value. Reflecting this shift in perspective, the phrase "data is the new oil" is being replaced by the more cautionary analogy of "data is the new yellowcake," highlighting the dual nature of data as both a valuable asset and a potential liability.
