Microsoft has included updates to improve compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in its latest Windows 11 preview build, 26120.3281.
The build permanently removes the Location History API, previously used by the now-obsolete Cortana virtual assistant, to access 24 hours of device location data. Microsoft did not confirm whether location data would still be stored remotely. The company has also disabled account-based content in File Explorer for Entra ID accounts (a cloud-based identity and access management service) within the European Economic Area (EEA). The change affects features like Recent, Favorites, Details Pane, and Recommended content, as these rely on user data that could potentially expose sensitive data.
Microsoft provided no timeline for these features to reach the general release of Windows 11.
The article makes no mention about whether UK users will benefit from the updates.
