The UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) reported that the number of maximum severity security threats has tripled over the past year. In its 2024 Annual Review, the NCSC revealed that 12 incidents reached this severity threshold from a total of 430 cases needing Incident Management support between September 2023 and August 2024, a 16% increase year-over-year. In addition, nationally significant incidents rose from 62 to 89, with six related to exploited zero-day vulnerabilities.
The most severe incidents, Category 1: National cyber emergency, cause sustained disruptions to critical services. Data shows that 347 reports involved data exfiltration and extortion, with 317 cases linked to ransomware—up from 297 the previous year.
Incoming NCSC CEO Richard Horne highlighted a growing cyber risk that outpaces defensive measures, urging public and private sectors to enhance cyber resilience. As such, Home stressed the need for organisations to view cybersecurity as a critical business investment rather than merely a compliance requirement.
