Data protection rules allowed child abusing priest to continue to work

Rev Canon Timothy Biles, an 89-year-old priest, has been sentenced to six years in prison for committing historical sexual offences against children during his tenure as a PE teacher and chaplain at St Francis School for Boys in Hooke, Dorset, in the 1960s. His crimes went unreported for decades until 2018 when two of his victims reconnected via Facebook and revealed their experiences of abuse. Despite the ongoing investigation, Biles was able to participate in funeral services within the Beaminster Team Ministry, as the ministry team was unaware of the allegations against him until recently. Rev Canon David Baldwin, the rector of the team, explained that “safeguarding and data protection” protocols prevented him and his colleagues from being informed of the case for two years after the diocese was notified in 2022 about the police investigation into Biles.
