Big Tech firms close to eliminating need for passwords

Several leading technology companies, including Apple, Alphabet and Microsoft, claim that they are advancing plans to eliminate the need for passwords. The Fast Identity Online Alliance group, which is composed of 250 members, says users will log into online accounts by using unlock mechanisms on personal devices or computers. Users would connect a public key on the account service provider’s server to a private one on their device instead of sending a password over a network.
