The Government Digital Service (GDS), part of the Cabinet Office, has opened a consultation on a proposal to update legislation on data sharing between departments to make it easier for service users to access government services online. The GDS is working on a single sign-on and identity-checking solution to access public services. The One Login programme will replace over 190 existing sign-in pathways and 44 different accounts. New legislation will be required under the Digital Economy Act 2017 in order for departments to share necessary information to support identity verification and reuse. The consultation will run for 8 weeks and closes on 1 March 2023.
UPDATE: 090123 - The government has published its data ethics assessment of the draft data-sharing legislation. The document outlines the need for the GOV.UK One Login programme and proposed data-sharing secondary legislation. It includes headings covering what expertise will be used, confirmation the programme will comply with the UK data protection law, that a Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) has been completed and will remain updated, a review of the data collection limitations, and consideration of the broader implications.
