The Department of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has published an explanatory memorandum for the Data Protection and Journalism Code of Practice 2023, which was laid before Parliament this week.
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is required to produce the code under section 124(1) of the Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA18), which provides practical guidance concerning the processing of personal data for journalistic purposes in accordance with the requirements of UK data protection law and other relevant guidance. The memorandum provides details on the legislative context and explains the background on why this is being done and why any changes are being made.
