A blog article published by data protection specialist Jon Baines highlights the appointment of Sir Chris Bryant MP as the Minister of State for Data Protection and Telecoms.
According to the government's press release, the new ministerial role will be responsible for:
- Digital infrastructure and telecoms
- Building Digital UK (BDUK)
- Data protection (including Data Bill)
- Information Commissioner's Office (ICO)
- Digital inclusion
- Space sector growth and UK Space Agency (UKSA)
To glean any further insights about Sir Chris Bryant's views on related policy, Baines looked at previous debates on the Data Protection and Digital Information (DPDI) Bill which tend to suggest Bryant supports carried-over ICO reforms and provisions on the digital verification and smart data in the Digital Information and Smart Data (DISD) Bill. However, he voted against plans watering down data subject rights (DSRs), extending the PECR soft opt-in to include political party marketing and giving the Department of Pensions (DWP) to monitor bank accounts to combat benefit fraud.
