On Friday, 20 September 2024, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND) announced a collaborative effort to pursue research development, test, and evaluation technologies for artificial intelligence (AI), cyber, resilient systems, and information domain-related technologies. The aim is to create methodologies, algorithms, capabilities, and tools that will be used to develop new concepts of operations focusing on real-world challenges. The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) will lead the effort for the UK, while Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) will lead for Canada. This collaboration is a response to the rapid pace of technology development and future challenges in an ever-changing geopolitical environment. Dr Nick Joad, Director of Science and Technology at the MoD, stressed the importance of international research collaborations with the US and Canada, highlighting that the agreement cements collective commitments to advancing emerging cyber security technologies to enhance the defence and security of the nations while minimising duplication.
