A new report from the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee called Encoding values: Putting tech at the heart of UK foreign policy follows a previous study that looked at how foreign policy should support the UK's role in influencing future technologies and setting standards. The report concludes that the UK's efforts to engage in conversations defining the future of tech lack clarity. Furthermore, the report recommends government "clearly articulate its position on data sharing, privacy and private-sector regulation, so that it can establish a starting point for discussions on deeper cooperation with the US and the EU." The UK will continue to be left out of conversations on transatlantic tech cooperation with the US and EU until we establish a well-defined policy. Until then, the report highlights that the UK will become "a rule-taker rather than a rule-maker".
