Every year, we celebrate international data protection day on the 28th of January. It's an opportunity to reflect on what privacy represents to us as individuals and collectively.
Below are some thoughts and reflections from senior privacy figures and leaders:
- European Data Protection Supervisor Wojciech Wiewiórowski posted a blog discussing the state of EU data protection ahead of Data Protection Day 2022 celebrations on the 28th of January. Wiewiórowski noted steps forward through Convention 108 and the EU General Data Protection Regulation but added that there is "still more to strive for, to achieve for data protection to work for all of us in Europe's digital future." Notably, he called on EU DPAs to "work together to promote the consistent application of data protection rules according to the EU's values and principles."
- European Commission: Věra Jourová and Didier Reynders issued a statement ahead of Data Protection Day.
- European Data Protection Board celebrates Data Protection Day 2022 with a short video.
- noyb marks Data Protection Day with a reminder that today marks the signing of the first pan-European data protection framework (Convention 108) in 1981.
- The IAPP has published an article looking at the origin and purpose of Data Protection/Privacy Day. Initiated by the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in 2006, the 28th of January was chosen for Data Protection Day because it marks the anniversary of the opening for signature of the Council of Europe's Convention 108 in 1981. Convention 108 holds special status as the first legally binding international agreement on data protection and continues to influence data protection laws around the world to this day.

(We will update this post throughout the day)
At Freevacy (as a training provider), we are fortunate to share in the reactions of our delegates after all the hard work they put into passing IAPP and BCS exams pays off. The relief. The confidence boost passing an exam always provides. And the gradual recognition of what the long term benefits will mean for people's careers.
We also appreciate what it represents to employers investing in professional development to add valuable skilled resources and deliver on their compliance obligations.
So anyway, here's wishing you all a happy data protection day!
