Research by students at Harvard University reveals anonymised data is not as anonymous as first thought. Using a custom-built tool, the students analysed personally identifiable information from data breaches and, despite many datasets containing “anonymised” data, the students easily identified users. Furthermore, anonymised data from one company can be linked to non-anonymised data from another, revealing personal details.
